Deputy Justice Minister Confers With Azeri Attorney General

BAKU In a meeting with Azeri Attorney General Aldar Hassanov here Wednesday, the Iranian Deputy Justice Minister Mohammad Ja'far Montazeri called for a speedy inking of an accord which would facilitate the extradition of prisoners between the two nations. Montazeri stated that the Iranian delegation is prepared to sign agreements on judicial cooperation, the extradition of criminals and transfer of prisoners.
Referring to about one hundred Iranian prisoners in Azerbaijan, the deputy justice minister stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran is willing to sign an interim memoranda of understanding (MOU) on transfer of prisoners between the two countries, adding that he had proposed the issue to the Azeri Justice Minister Suddabeh Hassanov at their meeting earlier. Montazeri pointed out that if the matter is materialized, one of the most outstanding complications of the transfer of prisoners between the two nations will be resolved.
Pointing to his visit to Azerbaijan's Penitentiary No.2, the deputy justice minister stated that he had become acquainted with the unbearable prison conditions under which the Iranian prisoners were held. Montazeri said that he was deeply concerned to observe that out of the thirty one prisoners held at this penitentiary, 29 were ill, and that 14 were suffering from tuberculosis. The deputy justice minister thanked the Azeri judicial officials for their cooperation and assistance.
Azeri Attorney General Aldar Hassanov said that he welcomes proposals made by the Iranian delegation, adding that he fully supported such a move. Emphasizing on the broadening of bilateral relations between the two friendly and Muslim nations, Hassanov stressed that the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Azeri nation shall never forget the support and assistance rendered by the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Azeri attorney general stated that three accords would soon be inked between the officials of the two countries, the factor which would profoundly contribute towards strengthening of relations between the two fraternal nations.
Saying that no obstacle exists in the way of inking of the agreement between the two parties, he was full of assurance that the Azeri National Parliament would also sanction them. The Azeri attorney general said that his country was for boosting up of judicial cooperation between the two nations.
